Dear Parents/Guardian,
Welcome back and welcome to 5th grade! I hope you enjoyed your summer! In 5th grade there are many fun and exciting things for your child. There are many important things to be accomplished this year. I am sure with your help and cooperation, this year will be a huge success.
This letter is designed to answer some basic questions that you might have at the onset of this school year. An orientation will be held sometime in September or October where I will discuss these matters further. If you have any other questions before that time, or throughout the remainder of the year, please feel free to contact me through a letter. Your child should give this letter to me at the start of the day. In the event that I get a letter, I will either respond back with a note or I will contact you at some point throughout the day. Remember, staying involved in your child’s education is the key to a successful year. Therefore, I would like to take a moment and discuss some of our classroom procedures.
Homework/Nightly Procedures: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, with the possible exception of the weekends. Students are expected to complete all of the assignments and return them the following day. The homework assignments should be copied in his/her homework notebook everyday! Also be sure to check your child’s homework folder nightly. You will usually find it packed with work, projects, flyers, notices from the office, as well as notices from me. Try to sort through them, and read each one. Your child should come to school the next day with a fairly empty folder. Just homework and notes for me.In addition to the nightly assignments, your child is expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes nightly. As part of the requirements for the school year, your child is expected to read 25 books that are appropriate to his/her level. Your child is to have a book in school with him or her at all times for silent reading. These books can be used to work toward the standard of reading 25 books. In addition to nightly reading, your son/daughter should be practicing his/her multiplication tables. If your child does not learn the multiplication tables, they will have a difficult time grasping concepts in math.
Test/Quizzes: Tests will be announced before they are administered. Quizzes may not be announced, but will always cover material presented in class. Any student who is sick for a test will have to make up the test upon his/her return to school.
Snack/Water: Your child will need a small, healthy snack each day. In addition to a snack, please have your child come in with a water bottle. By having a water bottle, it prevents your child from leaving the room and missing important instructional time. Please do not send in juice or soda. Your child will not be permitted to drink these items (unless specified for a special occasion).
I have attached a copy of the supply list. Please have all of your child’s supplies in as soon as possible. I would also appreciate if they are clearly labeled. If you have already done so, thank you very much. Please contact me if you have any concerns. I would be more than happy to get in touch with you as soon as possible.
